In 2021 I discovered The Awesome Music Project. It inspired me to create an original, video-formatted Winter Concert with my Jean Lumb Public School grade 1-8 students. Rob Carli and Dani Doucette from AMP agreed to help us out.

The students always love sharing their favourite songs with me, but the death of my music-loving grandmother inspired me to ask them to inquire about a family member’s favourite song. Each class listened to the songs and stories they had gathered and chose one to learn as a group.

For our Winter ‘concert’ we stitched together a video of the families introducing themselves and telling their song stories, along with video of the class performing our arrangement of those songs. Together we celebrated our community, the power of process over product, and the students’ musical success.
