#MyMusicStory
Submitted by: Carolyn Fe (Website, Bandcamp)
I was 20 years young and naïve when my career as a contemporary dancer/choreographer was soaring to heights unknown. Although I had considered myself well-versed in music, I was living with a budding musician who not only opened my eyes to the subtleties and artistries of mainstream music but introduced me to some “underground” artists of the time: Bauhaus, Cabaret Voltaire, Gary Numan and so many more. He showed me how music, when used as a soundtrack, can influence the audiences views on a movie. With my newfound appreciation and newly opened “eyes and ears” on music, my work became touted as “avant garde”, critics would say that I was pushing envelopes and challenging the audiences’ views on dance.
I worked a lot, and was blessed with many opportunities but my love life was a total mess. The more I worked, the more the budding musician became blindly jealous of my success; he abused me every opportunity he could. In one of his sad and sorry bouts of guilt, he took me to a movie, “Christiane F.” It was a German movie with English subtitles. All songs written by David Bowie except for "Heroes/Helden" which was a collaboration between Brian Eno, David Bowie and Antonia Maass. I knew “Heroes” long before the movie but never heard the lyrics until then. In the movie, Bowie sang it in German; not only did it hit me to my core, it woke me up. It was on my way home from the movie that I made my decision to leave him. I chose the day when I knew he wasn’t going to be at home, I quickly packed all I could and left. For a short time, I was homeless, dumpster-diving and going to work at the studio pretending I had my life under control. But. I. Was. Free. From then on, I pledged that I was going to be my own hero even if it was just for a day, every day.
