A DELOITTE CANADA SENIOR PARTNER RECOVERING FROM MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES, A RENOWNED MUSICIAN AND A CHARITABLE MOVEMENT FOR MENTAL HEALTH DURING AND AFTER COVID-19
For Immediate Release: October 6th, 2020. When an elderly man held up his thumb on the shore of the Bobcaygeon, Ontario canal, in front of his seniors’ facility with a huge smile on his face during COVID-19, Terry Stuart and Rob Carli knew they had done the right thing. The day before, the boat they rented for a floating concert broke down. Hauling generators and sourcing another boat, the executive and the musician were about to host the Spoons and other artists.
Terry, a Deloitte Canada Senior Partner, was so moved by the event, he knew he needed to speak out more about his own mental health challenges.
He’s going public with his story because he knows, now more than ever, Canadians need to hear that many are struggling, including those in “Corporate Canada”. We need to talk about it and then do something tangible about it. Terry has had direct experience with mental health challenges, both personally and with family and friends. He has recently taken time off to recharge and focus on bringing AMP to life.
Terry and Rob started their Not-For-Profit with an Amazon bestseller, The Awesome Music Project Canada: Songs of Hope and Happiness, a book featuring 111 personal stories about the healing power of music from Canadians such as Sarah McLachlan, Chris Hadfield, Madeleine Thien, Tamara Podemski and Rick Mercer.
They wanted to help bring the stories from The Awesome Music Project (AMP) to three long term care facilities and hundreds of distanced people along the shores. That’s why they were dedicated to finding that boat in Bobcaygeon.
With a focus on Stories, Songs and Science, AMP is “amplifying” that music is critical to mental health and proven by science. As a direct result of COVID-19 they started AMP4Life, partnered with the Canadian Music Therapy Fund, to provide sustainable digital music therapy programs. It will include long-term care, schools, hospitals and remote communities.
Their new fundraising goal is $10 million, after raising $200,000+ in just 4 months with concerts. To that end, they have now assembled a national team of experts.
Rob Carli, co-founder of AMP, is a professional musician and very successful composer who has taken music to Canada’s biggest stages and screens with the country’s most talented musicians.
