Song: Night Train by Oscar Peterson.

At a time in my early teens, when everything was so confusing and I didn’t know who I was

or what I should be; when I felt misunderstood and angry, Oscar Peterson came along.

With him, things started to make sense. I spent so many hours in my early teens trying to play the transcriptions to his music and wishing and willing for my hands to grow bigger so I could

play the same chords he did. I wanted to play exactly like Oscar Peterson - to sit in front of a

piano and own it like he did. Hours and hours spent trying, frustrated but challenged in the

best possible way. Good hours. Inspiring hours. Whenever I listen to this track, it reminds

me of simpler times when I got lost in music and just wanted to be the best I could be. It

reminds me to strip things back to basics, work hard, try and keep trying and that anything

is possible if you don’t give up.

And now, during this time, when everything seems so unsettling and uncertain, I turn to Oscar again to remind me that I must keep trying and never give up. And, ok, so maybe the size of my hands won’t increase, but resolve will.
