Time travel feels possible via music. It can transport you decades to your youth, when music really made an impression on you. You can recall who you liked, what you wore, and what you did on a Saturday night. Growing up in Toronto in the 1980s, I had the great pleasure of experiencing one of Canada’s best ever bands in Platinum Blonde; such an incredible trio.

One of my favourite tracks then and now is ‘Doesn’t Really Matter’ off their ‘Standing in the Dark’ album. I love how the song kicks off with the wicked guitar riff, how it builds to the chorus and then breaks to a killer drum solo; such a magical track. Even when I listen to it today, the song transports me back to my room on the waterbed, clock radio with tape cassette player nearby where I’d stare at the ceiling and listen to the Top 6 at 6 on 680 CFTR, and at 10PM on Q107 and soak in the beautiful music of the time.

Hearing that song and other music of those days transports me on a cellular level, as I strut about my bedroom today, hairbrush microphone in hand, and belt it out in front of the mirror. For that, I’m very thankful for Platinum Blonde and the amazing power of music.

While working on his fourth album, he took an artistic turn he couldn’t have expected, leading him in a surprise direction that ended up fulfilling many of his ambitions.
